Ian Howat joined the board of directors of Pinetree Capital in April 2016. Mr. Howat has over 30 years of experience in the mining industry: four years as an exploration geologist; three years as a banker; 12 years in the corporate development department at a major Canadian mining company; and over 12 years as a base metals analyst at National Bank Financial. Mr. Howat has developed a broad understanding of the technical, economic, environmental and social issues impacting the mining industry. Mr. Howat holds an MBA from the University of Western Ontario located in London, Ontario and a B.Sc. (Honours Earth Science) from the University of Waterloo located in Waterloo, Ontario.
Damien Leonard was appointed President of Pinetree Capital in August 2020 and has been a Director since 2017. He previously served as CEO from 2017 to 2020, and COO from 2016 to 2017. He has over a decade of public markets investing experience in Canada, the United States and Europe, specializing in small-cap software company investing and special situation investing.
Craig Miller joined the board of directors of Pinetree Capital in April 2016. Mr. Miller is an experienced executive whose principal business focus is growth strategy and acquisitions for companies in the food and hospitality industries. He obtained his MBA from Harvard Business School and subsequently worked for six years at McKinsey & Company. For the past nine years he has been part of Pineridge Group, which has managed a portfolio of leading food and consumer goods manufacturers. Mr. Miller also serves as chairman of the board of Rowe Farms Meats Ltd, a leading supplier and retailer in the organic and natural foods sector. In addition to his MBA, Mr. Miller's educational background includes a master's degree from M.I.T. and an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Queen's University.
Howard Riback, CPA, CA, joined the board of directors of Pinetree Capital in April 2016. Currently, Mr. Riback is the Director, Private Equity with Sectoral Asset Management Inc., a Montreal based asset manager specializing in investing in public and private companies in the life sciences sector. Between 2013 and 2015, Mr. Riback was CFO at Chrysalix Energy Capital, a cleantech focused venture firm. Between 1991 and 2013, he was Partner and CFO at Ventures West, a leading Canadian venture capital firm where he was involved in raising and managing six technology and life science venture capital funds.
Before joining Ventures West in 1991, Mr. Riback held a senior financial position with one of the largest property development and management companies in Vancouver. Prior to that, he was Manager, Taxation Services with Coopers & Lybrand (predecessor to PricewaterhouseCoopers). Mr. Riback holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia and
Peter Tolnai joined the board of directors of Pinetree Capital as Chairman in April 2016. Mr. Tolnai served as CEO of Pinetree Capital from April 2016 to September 2017. Previously, Mr. Tolnai was founder and President of Orchard Capital Group Inc. (1997-2016), CEO of Butterfield & Robinson (luxury travel; 2008-2009); a Vice-President of Citibank Canada, Venture Capital Division (1995-1997); a Vice-President of Clairvest Group Inc. (1990-1995)l; and a Vice-President of Helix Investments Ltd (1982-1990). Mr. Tolnai holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA from Queen’s University.
